If I subscribe to Linux web hosting products can I run them on my PC. I run Windows at home?

It only refers to the os run on the servers themselves... fyi google only use linux on their servers but u use them from your windows machine for searching, gmail etc right?

The only essential program is an FTP package to allow you to send your completed pages to your hosting. I have several websites which all run on Linux hosts. It%26#039;s actually preferred as it%26#039;s easier to run MySQL databases, PHP scripts and the like. Many are actually supplied by your host. Free.

Windows hosted sites usually require ASP scripting, Front Page extensions and very different database applications. Linux web hosts are in the majority, by far.

Linux usually runs Apache server, PHP scripting and MySQL server which you can also add to your Windows PC for testing your websites.

Now a common misconception is that if you are running a windows operating system then your hosting package should also be the same, the same misconception applies to Linux.

I would avoid GoDaddy (for hosting, they%26#039;re okay for domain name registration)... especially if you%26#039;re going to have any kind of dynamic site that will require database connections when people are viewing the pages. Pick a host that isn%26#039;t optimized for this and your site will get S.L.O.W. when you have any amount of decent traffic...

Stuff to look for:

1) A host that has the database server on the same physical machine as the web server.

2) A host that has CRON (task scheduling).

That depends on what exactly you mean.

If you mean your own server as in you have two computers at your home, and you want to use one of them to host a website (or two) from that location, then that is possible. As far as recommended, well, it depends on your expertise and level of knowledge, ability, etc. If you go this route, I highly recommend DSL or cable ISP (broadband, do not try it on dialup).

If you mean going with a commonly known company (otherwise known as a server farm) and paying a setup fee, then having to configure the machine, keep it updated, etc. - This is almost as difficult as the first option (running it out of your home or business - assuming a small business) however there are some things to consider. It is not physically at your location. You do not have to pay the electric bill for the server running all the time and you do not need to worry about managing your bandwidth, but what happens if there is a hardware failure? Does the server farm buy the parts, or do you?

A shared server can be a good option due to low cost, someone else is doing the maintenance, paying for the electric and bandwidth, but again, you are at their mercy - even more so.

It depends on how much control you need, how much you can trust a company you would choose, and how much you have to invest. Also note that you can (literally anyone can) get a minimal install of gentoo linux (53 MB) install it in virtually any computer, and use it as an http server.

It seems you have done some homework, but I think you would really do better for now to research a little more and make up your own mind. It even pays to find someone who has had many different hosting experiences and ask them to honestly give you a referral to a reliable web host. I will not name any here, but you can seearch %26quot;dedicated server%26quot; %26quot;shared server%26quot; %26quot;linux hosting%26quot; %26quot;bsd hosting%26quot; etc.
